Elephant  Cave
Elephant Cave is one of the most important caves of western Crete. It is an impressive underwater cave full of stalactites and stalagmites reddish color that was discovered accidentally discovered in 1999 by a spear fisherman. In the cave found bones of elephants and other rare findings which give useful information about the prehistory of Crete. The bones of the Elephant belonged to an entirely new kind of elephant, which exists nowhere else in the world, the Elephas chaniensis, as it was named. The entrance of the cave, located 13 meters below sea level, while the length of the cave is 160 meters. The cave is located at “Drepano” cape near to “Kalyves” Village, 26Km east from Chania.


HOW TO GET THERE: By car towards Kalyves and then by small boat reach the cave.
