Gouverneto Monastery
Gouverneto Monastery
Gouvrneto Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries of Crete as it was built by Catholic monks in 1537 at an altitude of 260 m. Also, it is called “Our Lady of the Angels” because it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Externally, Gouvrneto Monastery looks like Venetian Castle with towers that were used to defend it from raiders. The monastery has no valuable relics or remains as it was plundered by the Turks during the Greek revolution of 1821. It is located on the northern side of the Akrotiri peninsula about 4 km from Agia Triada Monastery and 19 km north of Chania.

HOW TO GET THERE: By car taking the road to the Venizelos Tombs and Kounoupidiana.  Then, turn west towards Kambani and follow the signs to Agia Triada Monastery because there are several signs to Agia Triada Monastery but not to Gouverneto Monastery.
