German Shelter in Platanias
German Shelter in Platanias
The shelter of Platanias was constructed in 1942 under the Temple St. Dimitrios by the Germans, imposing forced works to local residents. It consists of a complex of underground chambers and tunnels (the biggest is 170m.) that during World War II it was used by the occupying forces to store ammunition and military supplies. The site was perfect choice for that scope since the existence of the church protected the area from aerial attacks. Today, the shelter has been converted into a museum exhibiting interesting objects from the period of the occupation and important photographs from the Battle of Crete.

HOW TO GET THERE: By car towards Platanias, then direct to Ano Platanias Square. Here, you see the temple of St. Dimitrios and the Shelter of Platanias.
